A Zippo Manufacturing Company-t George G. Blaisdell alapította, 1932-ben.

LOT kódokat: bal oldalon A-tól L-ig a hónapokat jelölik (A=január, B=február stb.), míg jobb oldalon a római szám az évet jelöli (1986=II). Tehát például az F XII kódolású öngyújtót 1996 júniusában gyártották. 2001-től a római számok helyett arab számokat használnak (tehát pl.: H 04 = 2004. augusztus)

Zippo — the history of the lighter
The Zippo Manufacturing Company was founded by George G. Blaisdell in 1932. He acquired the manufacturing rights to an Austrian windproof lighter called Cyklon, redesigned it with a rectangular body and hinged lid, and began production in 1933. Blaisdell liked the sound of “zipper”, the name of a relatively new invention, and named his product Zippo. The first lighter sold for $1.95.
Their reliability and wind resistance quickly made them popular in the US armed forces. During the Second World War, shortages of chromium and bronze led to lighters being made from black-painted steel. The factory’s entire output at that time went to troops fighting in Europe. During the Vietnam War, 200,000 Zippos were supplied to soldiers. These received distinctive decorations, and many veterans still treasure them.
By the time of the original article, more than 400 million Zippo lighters had been made since 1933, largely to the original design with only minor modifications. Zippos became legendary and frequently appeared in Hollywood films, including Pulp Fiction.
A Zippo’s production date can be determined from the markings on its base. Between 1932 and 1955, there was no separate date code: the wording, layout and typeface provide clues. Dots were used from 1955, and lines between 1966 and 1986, to indicate the production year. In 1986, the factory introduced LOT codes: letters A to L on the left identify the month, with A for January and B for February, and so on. On the right, Roman numerals indicate the year, with II representing 1986. For example, a lighter marked F XII was made in June 1996. From 2001, Arabic numerals replaced Roman numerals: H 04, for example, means August 2004.
